World We Imagine Pitch

STOP...ME TIME   Our mission is to create a space where people can work on healthy habits, bettering themselves, and their communication with others.   When you think of self care, what typically comes to mind? Is it going to therapy alone, journaling, or maybe just taking a bubble bath? While all of these things are great ways to practice self-care, they are all activities done alone. With Stop...Me Time , an environment is created where you can practice self-care, learn new habits, and also learn how to better socialize with others!  Nearly 10% of US adults suffer from depression, and even more people suffer from depressive episodes or anxiety due to stressful life events. However, with proper habits and self-care, we can change how we manage stress. Furthermore, learning healthy habits with others and learning to respect how others cope, will also help us be better people and will help the world be a better place. Stop...Me Time is choosing to look at how we help...

World We Imagine Part 1

I think the first step people can take to make the world a better place is to be more empathetic and respect one another's opinions whether you agree with them or not. It seems like people do too much talking and not enough listening. Everybody thinks that what they think is right, and are not open to listening to others or changing their perspective. Our society today has become fueled by war, arguments, and disagreements instead of civilized talks and respect. In short, appreciating other people's stories, their perspectives, and their opinions will help the world be a better place. We can all come to compromise. Of course, respecting other people is easiest to implement at the most basic levels of society: to me, this is in daily conversations and actions. Fixing systemic problems in our world such as massive gaps in socioeconomic status, access to resources, etc. will be much more challenging. I think it is important that we have raised awareness lately with problems in ou...

SENIORITIS....STRESS?

Image
I am using this final random blog post as a rant. Forgive me. Maybe I need a therapy session, but this will have to do to get my thoughts out. Perhaps a way to de-stress. If you can relate to this, then cheers! We are in the same boat together.  When I envisioned my senior year of college, I envisioned a lot of free time. Cruising through classes I found were "kind of" interesting, and spending a lot of time with friends I may not see again...for a long time. You know you see those seniors in the movies making the best memories and partying all the way to graduation. Well, in fact, it isn't just in the movies. I see these students all around me. I hear the music blasting outside of my house at 3:00 in the morning on a Monday night. However, I am NOT having these experiences. Far from it. I knew choosing to be a double major with a very difficult course load would force me to sacrif...

BOOK 2 POST 2

Losing Eden-- A Biophilic World? Upon finishing this book, I thoroughly enjoyed learning how humans have a natural tendency to gravitate towards nature and how it helps our mental health. Lucy Jones writes about this intersection between science and the natural world and how we are discovering the reason WHY nature helps us. At the same time, we are also destroying nature. This book begs you to think about ways to combat our own destruction of a world intended to help us.   Lucy made a point about how 68% of our world will be living in urban settings by 2050 and that many cities should try to be biophilic. For example, Detroit is biophilic today. To be biophilic means to have a natural inclination to nature . Cities are beginning to plant small community gardens, are creating paths for bicyclists, and creating "green rooftops"-- gardens on top of skyscrapers. Creating a symbiotic relationship between nature and urban settings seems like a total oxymoron, but perhaps it is t...

BOOK 2: POST 1

Losing Eden by Lucy Jones Wake Up and Taste the Soil? Lucy Jones teaches us how nature can heal our body and soul   For my second book I have chosen to read Losing Eden by Lucy Jones. I chose this book because I myself have had a difficult year in my personal life. I wanted to learn how I could potentially use nature in my life to overcome obstacles. After all... we are living in California-- perhaps one of the most prettiest places we can be in our country (in my opinion).  When I first started reading this book, I did not expect it to start how it did. Lucy begins explaining how nature helped her out of a life-threatening addiction to drugs. Nature was a crucial component in her recovery. She would walk daily down the marshes near her rehab center. Once she was able to live on her own, she had to rely on a pear tree visible out of her apartment window to stop herself from relapsing. I have a succulent that I really love in my room. Although I don't necessarily rely on it, ...

Call Me Lindsey Vonn Beginner Skier to Black Diamond   Over President's Day weekend I went skiing for the first time. Driving up to Big Bear Mountain, I was terrified. Coming from Illinois, the closest thing we get to skiing is a hill and oftentimes fake snow. Looking at the steepness of the mountain and these tiny dots that were people traveling down did not make me excited. However, I am a very competitive and adventure-seeking person, so I knew I was going to try.  Two of my closest friends were my teachers and instructed me on some vital skills for beginner skiing:  Turn your poles straight out in the direction you want to turn  Stand perpendicular to the mountain to stop Faster skiers must look out for slower skiers Unfortunately for me, I do not know how to ski slowly. For my first time ever, I was flying down the mountain and was even asked by a worker how long I had been skiing because I was going so fast. This was the first problem of the day. Second...
