World We Imagine Part 1
I think the first step people can take to make the world a better place is to be more empathetic and respect one another's opinions whether you agree with them or not. It seems like people do too much talking and not enough listening. Everybody thinks that what they think is right, and are not open to listening to others or changing their perspective. Our society today has become fueled by war, arguments, and disagreements instead of civilized talks and respect. In short, appreciating other people's stories, their perspectives, and their opinions will help the world be a better place. We can all come to compromise.
Of course, respecting other people is easiest to implement at the most basic levels of society: to me, this is in daily conversations and actions. Fixing systemic problems in our world such as massive gaps in socioeconomic status, access to resources, etc. will be much more challenging. I think it is important that we have raised awareness lately with problems in our world, such as global warming and systemic racism. But we need to start moving beyond raising awareness, and continue with real change. It's all easier to say we want change then actually do something. And I think it will take years. I wonder what the American dream really is for people?
Answering the second question on what it would be like to follow a dream or passion in the real world after I graduate, unfortunately (maybe selfishly) all I am thinking about is myself. And I do genuinely feel like I am trying to pursue my dream and passion currently. Of course, I have imagined that the path I am taking would be easier-- maybe I would be one of those people that goes to medical school right after graduation, but I am not. Instead of thinking about "what-ifs", I am learning to appreciate my own journey more and am glad I am not backing down.
Hi Zoe,
ReplyDeleteI liked that your piece was reflective of your own life. I agree with your statement that people need to become more empathetic and respectful. However, it seems a little unrealistic. Humans have been alive for thousands of years, yet we still face the same issues of war, socioeconomic gaps, and climate change. Since it's impossible to change the minds of others, it is probably best to focus on yourself. If people started to do what makes them happy, then maybe they'd learn about respect and empathy. Too many people back down from their goals in order to make more money or have an easier life. I think this is a significant reason as to why our world is so cruel. As for a company pitch, I don't know what yours could be about. Maybe a show/book about following your dreams? Disney movies follow this format, and they make millions, so it could be worth a shot.

Zoe!
ReplyDeleteWoahhhhhhhhh. That was quite the post right there sister. I loved it and could not agree more. In this day in age, we are so narrow-minded. We consume media that reiterates what we already believe and we avoid conflict because so rarely does it result in understanding rather than anger. What is the solution? How do we find the middle ground in a society in which half of the population dismisses opposing views as "fake news"? I don't know and it concerns me greatly. I like the way you think Zoe... don't lose that questioning mind of yours please. Good luck in your journey! You're gunna rock rock rockkkkk it!
